Northeastern University in Kuwait I spent my whole life preparing myself for a good career in the future. I essentially have been a diligent and active student, seeking for excellence in the field I chose to take. I took my elementary from 1994 to 1999 at Lycee Francais de Koweit, a French school in Kuwait. I have become fluent in speaking and writing in French because of our training in that school. Then, I took my middle school during 1999-2002. I transferred to an American school called American School of Kuwait. I continued my high school there from 2002 and I have graduated in 2006. Evidently, I have been exposed to international schools and this allowed me to adapt easily to different environments. Overall, I consider myself as an achiever and an outstanding student, because not everyone can simply adapt easily and still be able to surpass the challenges of change. Transferring to another school like the University of Washington – Seattle would not be much of a problem for me. It would even help me reach my dream of establishing a good future for myself. I am currently on my second year in college. I am studying in Northeastern University in Kuwait. I am planning to major in Finance because it is my dream ever since to work in a bank. However, I’m also planning to take a double-degree, maybe Finance and Accounting, if possible but I am more inclined to Finance. I have a natural flair for mathematics and I see that Finance can maximize my potential. Moreover, I am a very outgoing and inquisitive person and most people say that these kinds of traits can make a good financial analyst. I also am very in love with the idea of money and investments. I am also very business-minded and knowledge in Finance can help me succeed in my business endeavors in the future and also help make decisions wiser, since Finance covers a wide variety of topics like management, accounting, investments, economics and forecasting. Furthermore, Finance is very essential in this fast-paced world. The market, especially the financial and money market have been growing really quickly. This alone truly excites me. In the future, I do wish to venture into banking, as I have said earlier. Later on I would like to start my own business. Specifically, I would like to sell specialty items from Kuwait, maybe import them to different countries. I also want to try on working in the stock exchange, maybe a broker or an investor. I like my money to circulate and grow. I believe that the University of Washington-Seattle will be able to help me become the person I wanted to be. It has a good Finance program and a good set of faculty. I also think that the campus itself has a good image of producing quality graduates. I am from Kuwait. I am really proud of our culture. We are much known for our hospitality. We are very affectionate. We Kuwaitis have a deep concern for our neighbor, thus we value our family and community very highly. Women’s privacy is also given such great importance and it is widely upheld that women must be treated with respect. We also follow the teachings of Islam. I regard myself as religious but despite the conservative culture I grew with, I am very liberal and open-minded. Most of the youth in Kuwait has been following a very westernized culture already, unlike most of the traditional Kuwaitis, especially women, who are still conservative in their values and even in their clothing. My strict culture has really challenged me to explore and to broaden my ways of thinking. As I mentioned earlier, I studied in international schools, which actually allowed me to expand my horizons, my beliefs and ways of thinking. This made me stand out among other Kuwaitis. I think the perceptions others have created to Kuwaitis might change if they are able to meet me. Just like any other human being, I experienced a lot of hardships in my life. It was not just about having a different life compared to the usual Kuwaiti children. I also experienced a loss in one of the members of my family – my father. He passed away when I was young. I grew up without having a father for most of my life and I think really affected me. I always think as myself these questions, “What if I had a father, would it be different? Would my life be different? Would my decisions be different?” This was even aggravated by the fact that my mother had to work harder. Before women have different working opportunities. It is harder for women to get a job unlike now, women have been really stepping-up and restrictions in opportunities were already eased. With this experience in my family, I was forced to become independent. However, despite this tragic fact, I think it became one of my assets. Being independent is my strongest asset. It made me survive and it made me stronger as a person. I do not have to rely on others to help myself get the things I need, the things I want. I can easily do things on my own and teach myself things through my everyday experience, even from my own mistakes. I believe this independence of mine will really push me to reach my dreams. Because whenever I want something, I see to it that I can get it, even if no one is really supporting. That is how determined I became. Independence can help in my future endeavors. Since I have become really independent, it allowed me to discover my dream by working hard. I had a lot of experiences in the real world already. For four consecutive years, I have been working during summers in various offices and places. I worked as a sales associate in Starbucks. I also worked as an assistant to a loan officer in a bank in Kuwait called National Bank of Kuwait. This experience really expanded my knowledge in finance. Later on, since I’ve become really fond of finance, I worked at a finance company called Kuwait Middle East Finance and Insurance Company. Mostly I did was clerical work. With these working experiences, I think I am really capable of succeeding in the field of Finance. I am not only interested in it. Based on my performance, I have got potential in this field. Aside form summer jobs, I also do volunteer work. I worked at a youth establishment in Kuwait that focuses on helping youths acquire jobs during the summer. I am really fulfilled by helping my fellow youth get a job. Since nowadays, it is really challenging to find a good job. I also did a lot of events-organizing throughout the summer. I also volunteered at hospital for the elderly. My main task there is usually on deskwork. I also did volunteer work spreading the message of the negative impact of drinking. At present, I am actively involved in a chess club in Northeastern University. I am also very active in a finance club, where we regularly hold seminars. With these vast experiences of mine, I believe I have prepared myself for a degree in Finance. Moreover, I have acquired a lot of skills that can make me flexible and competent to study in a different university like the University of Washington-Seattle. I also believe that I will not fail in this endeavor and my choice of doing this can bring me closer to my goal of having a successful career. Read More
