My Conception and Desire to Study Economics I intend to study economics, which is a subject that I developed interest since my childhood. That was when I was in primary school. One day I overheard my class teacher talk about how the economy had deteriorated. I even heard him say that schools were not doing well because of the poor economy. I was courageous enough to let my teacher know what I heard him talking about. I also explained to him regarding how my mother bothered me when she talked about the economy. The teacher was not mean. He explained to me about the economic crisis and how it affected the nation and the citizens in general. However, I was too young at the time and could not understand all the aspects of what he referred to as “the economy”. He understood this and told me that if I worked hard and studied economics in the University, I would be capable of helping the economy to recover. I would also assist my mother and the inhabitants of our village to solve their economic problems. I decided that I would like to become what he called an economist when I grew up. I told my mother and she was so pleased. Since then, the teacher became my mentor until I completed primary school. When I joined secondary education, I began taking some subjects that made me understand what Economics is. I also learnt a lot regarding the economic crisis and visualized what my teacher meant when he explained to me regarding economic crisis in the country. I realized that I was good in economics and mathematics, and I was wordless when my secondary school teacher congratulated me in front of the whole class, saying that I was one of the best students that the other students could emulate for them to do well in economics and mathematics. This gave me a challenge in my school work. I had to work hard to accomplish the best in economics because first; I wanted to accomplish my dream of helping my mother, villagers and my country never to be faced with an economic crisis of such intensity and secondly, I did not want to embarrass my class teacher who had pointed me out as the leader in economics and mathematics. I got good grades in the two subjects as well as in other subjects as the teacher advised me that I had to be good in the other subjects to support my ambition, even though I was excellent economics and mathematics. I believe I will once accomplish my childhood choice of becoming an economist. While in high school, I invested in stocks and was always reviewing market reports to try and understand the fluctuations and my gains. I used to receive guidance from my economics teacher, and I realized how the business worked. He used to offer some specialized economics courses to me so that I could understand economic concepts related to stocks, which were not taught in the curriculum. I gained substantial knowledge and confidence in economics, especially due to the fact that I gained profits from the stocks investment. I also acquired experience in consumer behavior and aspects of the market system while working as a marketer in a mobile game company in Korea. These experiences strengthened my conception and desire to study economics. Part 2 I am a critical thinker who pays attention to details. I always maintain focus and appreciate intelligent decisions. Many times I have helped others out of problems. I value honesty and responsibility, as well as determination in accomplishing tasks. I have a high level of emotional intelligence, which helps a leader to develop effective teams for accomplishment of a shared vision. I am an effective leader who is a problem solver. I have always been capable of spearheading conflict resolution in my group, which has always made me to be selected as the group leader through out my high school education. I am talented in predicting the outcomes of actions that people engage in. For example, I predicted the collapse of a financial institution operating in Seoul, which used to provide credit facilities to local business people. I did not have any expertise but after witnessing a lending boom in the financial institution, I felt that some borrowers were not honest with the organization and would fail to repay. If I was among the managers at the time just before its collapse, I believe I would have saved the organization from bankruptcy. I have acquired several awards for various leadership positions and achievements in school, the most important being an award for the best high school economics student in my final year. I have interacted with various business people on various occasions as I travelled to various states such as Hawaii and Alaska among others, where I learnt a bit of international trade although I had not gone for missions related to trade. I searched for information in the business archives and newspapers in these states to learn more about entering the enormous market of the United States. I feel proud that I have wide knowledge concerning the local economy, foreign markets as well as international trade, which I believe will be significant in my studies. I will not find economics a vague subject; hence I believe that I am among the right students for the course. I am usually proud of my mother because of her contribution to the person I am today. When I was a child, I would always hear her saying that the economy was bad. Any time when she went to the market for shopping, I used to hear her comments that the economy was not favorable. I loved her so much and wondered what economy she talked about. After learning what economics was, I worked hard to be successful so that I could assist her. I attribute my achievements in high school to her since she keeps my spirits of studying economics high and always reminds me to work hard to change the economy for the better. Read More
