Extract of sample "My Interest in Modern English Literature"

My Interest in Modern English Literature I intend to pursue English Literature as my major in UC. My interest in this subject developed since my childhood. When attending the elementary school, I read a lot regarding the literature of different cultures. The thought of becoming a professional in literature motivated me to read more poetry and narratives, which were significant in improving my understanding and fluency in English. However, I also read Korean and Japanese literature. I developed substantial interest in world literature in general. I have always maintained this interest and I always wish that one day I will become a literature professional. Over the period that I have been reading scholarly work of professionals in literature, I discovered that I was gaining some experience in regard to interpreting what I read. This involved poems, novels, narratives and other literary works. According to Hamlin, understanding literature is significant in understanding the roots of a community (32). It is one of the disciplines that help people to develop socially and to understand where they are coming from and where they are going to. Such understanding is also important in interpreting the behavior of people in their day to day engagements, which is one of the capabilities that I highly value, and a factor that contributed to my interest in studying literature. I'm interested in all genres in literature such as; mystery, art, romance, fantasy, biography, philosophy, religion, etc. I have taught English to middle school children, which gave me experience and fluency while using the English language. I also acquired team building skills that are necessary in working together with other students to facilitate knowledge sharing. Having worked as an English educator to the middle school children gave me the opportunity to assess my own learning style as I tried to help the children to learn. I believe that this self assessment improved my capacity to learn; hence I will be successful in undertaking the course. I hope to become a writer so that someday I can inspire others to have good dreams and hopes in their life. I am hopeful that after completion of the course, I will be in a position to inspire people to discover their talents and also develop new ideas in form of writing to enhance their capability to think and identify opportunities that they can utilize to improve their quality of life. I will also be a mentor to young adults whom I noted during my high school and college years had no substantial contact with books and literature. I decided to study at UC after a lengthy consideration of various institutions that offer the course. I found out that out of the six possible institutions that I had identified, UC’s quality of education was superior to the rest. I have come across several prosperous professionals who graduated from the institution. In most of the local media companies, UC graduates are preferred in positions that involve developing presentations aimed at entertaining as well as educating listeners and viewers. I also know several of them who work for international media and other organizations dealing with educational, cultural activities and entertainment. I feel privileged to present my personal statement to this reputable institution. Reference Hamlin, H. Psalm, Culture and Modern English Literature, Melbourne: Cambridge University Press, 2004.
