Foundations in building and construction are the part that gets into contact with the ground and the main role these foundations play is to transmit the whole load of the building to the ground this is done in a way that settlement is limited and failure of the underlying soil is avoided. Foundations are classified into two types, either shallow foundations or deep foundations. The types of foundations to be used also is dependant on several factors, these being: - Influence such as water tables and gravel contours.

Strip foundation

Strip foundations are mostly used for domestic building, these types of foundations are used to support a line of loads; this can be due to a load-bearing wall and it can also be when a line of columns need support.

Trench Fill

This is highly used in areas where there is a high water table; it can also be used in areas where there are trees being grown near the building area. This may result in the ground soil being loose thus the foundation type is recommended.

Raft Foundation

These types of foundations are usually used on the grounds where there is a soft soil that is the soils that are loose and with low bearing capacity; the reason why it is recommended for these types of soils is that they can spread the loads over a larger area.
