Understanding and Managing People Name: Lecturer: Course name: Course code: Date: Introduction Possessing the ability to establish and apply a professional development plan is crucial in one’s career development. It helps to outline and clearly lay down the objectives of the career and the steps taken to achieve the stated objectives (Jasper, 2007). On the anticipation list is the personal as well as a group and academic goals. 1. Professional development plan: Three dimensional goals a) Self It is important to internalize and make an informed judgement on career goals and how they will help to boost one abilities and capacities. I therefore, decide to have one to six year career goals of completed a PhD and writing articles to the Public Health Journal. To start with, I need to align personal objectives with the organizational goals and have a panorama of say five years in the future. Such development objectives will be to enhance the level of employability and critically deal with sentimental feelings, temperaments and emotions (Jasper, 2007). The mission to attain the objectives includes the capacity to self start, increase levels of assertiveness, engender the ability to manage and be in control of time and timelines. It requires discipline and industriousness to work on each item and oversee change of past habits and passive culture. In addition, it is imperative to have effective methods of communication like writing, listening and speaking as wells as interpersonal, file management and numerical skills through the use of computers and library facilities (Jasper, 2007). It requires that I begin some more continuing classes in education, workshops and conferences to attend and perhaps solid projects to be implemented and completed by ticking a milestone checklist. b) Group Working Working as a group not only develops a working relationship with peers but also helps to understand my emotions, temperaments of workmates, their strengths and weaknesses. I will learn that effectively working as a team makes the team objectives quickly realized with minimal differences ensuing by amicably solving conflicts. By respecting other people’s views, opinions and their point of view, group working has proved to be exciting especially when team members cooperate and direct their energies to goal attainment. I will also learn to bargain or have the capacity to negotiate, beseech members has greater chances of success than simply coercing and forcing objectives down the throat of others. Teamwork is the reason why an institution like the university has made progress in teaching and research. The channels of communication and conflict resolution are effective and efficient which is basically why graduates are easily absorbed into the job market. I cherish working with like minded people and those who have aspirations and desires for success. c) Academic Goals Self fulfillment and team spirit have improved in discussions and debates. By realizing that people have varied opinions on issues and principles it asserts to the fact that no one knows everything and we live to depend on each others strengths while lifting and mitigating our weaknesses. I will learn a great deal to do research papers, make informed analysis and scan literature materials for connected and similar information. With the aid of library books, online reading materials and lecture notes, I will easily determine my progress through improved grades and greater access to better employment opportunities. I will learn that possessing referencing, library and statistical skills will help bring a totally new professional in nursing career that is ready to help others grow intellectually and emotionally (Burton, & Ormrod, 2011). 2. Progress Review While undertaking my article writing and progression to the PhD dissertation, I have gained a lot from the part time teaching work at the University. The Department of Public Health gave me the opportunity to showcase my teaching prowess and capacity to actuate information dissemination as well as adding to the bank of knowledge through article writing. Learning from how to uplift self worth was by believing in my own abilities, reflecting on my failures and requesting for assistance from the faculty members on how best to manage classes, best teaching methods and working relationships (Campbell, Longbottom & Pooler, 2007). I learned to give opinion sheets to my students who rate my approach and teaching capability in addition to requesting for similar opinions from concerning my personal relationship with them. I would go to the Head of the Department for a short chat concerning the experiences of teaching, and how best to approach special cases of students. To increase chances of earning more income, I needed a PhD, write more papers and articles and gain a lot of experience in classroom teaching. This was meant to help revise and equip my original study plan, in addition to monitoring and evaluating whether the earlier plan is in accordance with the teaching and writing goals. I purposed to use a projector and a lap top in my presentations which has dramatically improved. Besides, I allowed and encouraged my students to form focus group discussions and discuss on the prevalent rates of disease and contemporary methods of prevention and control. I succeeded in requesting them to group work as well as engaging in further research. I knew that I had imparted research skills and improved their levels of dependability on lecture notes alone. With the ratings of students as excellent and good, greater progress had been made on teaching methods and content delivery. Improving on my financial obligations has been a silent aim, and this has been a long term plan of more than five years (Quinn, 2008). I had purposed to increase my level of employability through attaining a doctorate from an accredited university and in reference to a college with good status by enhancing and promoting research. Students, faculty members and readers of various medical journals I have contributed in are upbeat that though extensive coverage especially in comorbidity research is required, the approach had been detailed and simplified. I am working on this new book relating to HIV Home Based Care and will expect to receive accolades and critique in equal measure. From the earlier journals, I could ask students and staff who read public health journals to channel their comments to the faculty website comments page. What I learned was amusing to date. I observed that 70 % of the readers are my students and faculty members while a significant fraction are also an active academic fraternity in the neighboring Universities (Quinn, 2008). I am confident and assured of contributing to the perpetual bank of knowledge through which Universities are founded on. Owing to the good funding especially on health sciences by both government and the university, attaining self fulfilling goals has been justified. To back this academic development, is the provision for a stipend and funding of research and laboratory testing equipment. Such motivational elements have been very developmental, and in return I grew more energized and thirsty for success (Moon, 2005). Growing as a health professional has always been my unspoken but consistent dream throughout my high school and university education. I have learned that working on improving self worth, realization and improvement is very possible through assessing one's strengths, learning on failures and weaknesses and increasing the seizure of opportune moments. Learning how to counter threats is not a toll order but a reasonable obstacle to hop over. Working in groups has increased on team bargaining by knowing how individuals work, their desires and dreams, how to support and help each person to achieve his/her goals (Moon, 2005). No single achievement is without struggle and set backs hence writing articles has taken more time with more demanding classroom requirements. I have been at the crossroads of balancing journal writing, writing my academic dissertation and teaching. Blending the three demanding career objectives has slightly been in conflict with family life. My wife and kids require their time with me too. I have resolved to create a time management plan which keeps into consideration the time component and the ability to balance activities on a logical basis (Moon, 2005). The time is to be shared proportionally with some time off for holidays and picnics. Finally, I have learned to relate to people through salutations, smile and appreciation. I have learned to accept correction and review in accordance with laid down rules of the University. I have also learned that delegating responsibility is important in helping others grow and develop their portfolios. Through mentorship, students have been able to contribute to the medical journal and increase their writing skills as well as prepare them for future academic interests (Todd, 2007). I hope to influence my children and neighbors at my private residence to emulate my example and desire to build their lives with enviable values, vision and mission. 3. Long-term Action Plan My initial year experiences were important to my progress. I developed energy to grow a career in nursing worth a million abundance of knowledge, sacrifice and diligence (Todd, 2007). I had to work closely with my supervisors, students, research respondents and faculty members. I believe the long-term goals will only be attained when a review of past achievements have been done. I was skeptical and doubtful that I had written a paper tiger which I was not not able to achieve. It takes a lot of resources and values to adhere to a professional plan especially when other needs like leisure, family and holidays are in force. I have learned that students are the best resource when it comes to research and they are willing to walk the extra mile to obtain good grades. In the meantime, I am working with a group of faculty members who are interested in starting a quality circle to essentially to help develop quality management in healthcare. In summary, the development plan will be as below; Year Objective(s) Resource(s ) Outcomes Requirements Remarks 1 Complete classes,Write PhD proposal $2000, class attendance, supervisor contact and brainstorming Complete classwork Defend the proposal and proceed to gather data Study materials;books, journals, articles etc. Assistance and guidance from professors Attend classes, submit assignments and term papers. Take exams 2 Write journals and become a graduate tutorial fellow Writing skills, initial publishing capital and negotiation skills Published journals Become a tutorial fellow Review literature online and in the library Start tutorial classes Buy a good laptop, provide reliable internet access and build on becoming a good teacher 3 Defend my PHD dissertation Statistical analytical skills Complete my doctorate Gathering and analysis of medical data Visit data collection sites, search for appropriate literature 4-5 Become a Full time lecturer Lecture notes, teaching skills and methods, presentation skills and motivational methods Become a university lecturer Teaching aids, LCD projectors and lecture hall listening devices Research laboratory lessons, standardization of examinations 6 Publish medical books Writing and referencing skills, library and online reading Publish and sell health science books Writing prowess, good editing speed Improve writing skills, request comments from readers Conclusion Based on these experiences, I will endeavor to support my research officers who will help gather data for my dissertations and perhaps purchase a car to ease my mobility. I will need to accumulate savings so as to finance a foreign trip for holiday through the sale of more journals, mobilize the publishers and booksellers to produce and sell more copies. In the nutshell, I hope to realize the objective of my five year plan (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011).
