Name of the Student Professor’s Name Course: Date B1: Visit a major news Web site and view a video of a commentator such as Rachel Maddow or Keith Olbermann (MSNBC) or Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly (Fox News). The discussion of Bill O’Reilly in Fox News on May. 25, 2016 - 6:39 discussing 2016 presidential election outcome. The video shows a clear articulation on issues on who Glenn Beck will vote for and how this will influence presidential outcome. I would use the same approach in informing people on my point of view concerning a particular issue. B2: What is the difference between an informative presentation and a persuasive one? Provide an example in your response. An informative presentation one simply convey information he or she has accurately while in persuasive presentation, one seeks to influence how the audience thinks, feels or make a decision. Secondly informative presentation one simply present one side of an issue while persuasive presentation one need to discuss the two sides’ issue. Lastly, in an informative presentation one need not to call audience to action while in persuasive presentation, one need to do so. For example: Informative main point: - “Some college students enjoy living on campus because of the convenience.” Persuasive point of view: - “Living on campus is more enjoyable than living off campus because of the convenience it offers.” B3: Compare and contrast two television programs, noting how each communicates the meaning via visual communication rather than words or dialogue. The two programs under analysis here is from Fox News TV channels. The programs are:- Red eye by Tom Shillue and Special Report by Bret Baier Both programs uses much of visual expression in explaining scenario in their presentation. Special report behaves as if they are presenting news to the viewers in trying to convince the viewers to buy their opinion on a particular issue. Though it is an informative presentation the visual expression being used portrays the presentation like persuasive (Neves, Pedro & Robert p 448). For red eye, that guy has the comedic timing of whooping cough. Which is a way of presenting the information. The smile is very attractive and friendly to the viewer. This is a good way of presenting information. B4: Search online for an informative speech or presentation that applies to business or industry. Indicate one part or aspect of the presentation that you thought was effective and one you would improve. Provide a link to the presentation in your entry. (www.yastrow.com/speaking) The informative speech is by Steve Yastrow on an interactive workshop where he gives a speech on. “Do your customers believe in you?” The topic of the speech is very effective, short and catches the eyes. All business depends on customers for their success and all would wish to here that their customers believe in them. The speech discuss extensively major issues on the relationship between customers and marketing individuals, the speech fails to link the product and the customer and other external factors that influences business customer relationship. This is the main area which I would fixed in the speech by bringing all these factors (Neves, Pedro & Robert p 978) B5: Pick a product or service and come up with a list of five points that you would address in a two minute informative speech. Place them in rank order and indicate why. TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO 2016/5 TX 7 SEATS Year of manufacture Transmission Drive Engine type CC Fuel type B6: Think of a social issue, widely held belief, or political position where change has occurred in your lifetime, or where you would like to see change happen. What kinds of persuasion and motivation were involved – or would need to happen – to produce measurable gain? Record your thoughts One of the recent changes in political position which has taken place is the Brexit. This is Britain exiting out of European Union. I would persuade the audience of the benefits of staying in the Brexit and in case they exited from the union. For instance, I would use the love of Football and how this would affect football arrangement including champion league and how this will affect top players and coaches entering Britain. I would motivate them to change their position on the issue (Neves, Pedro & Robert p 348) B7: Do you think the principle of consensus often works The first person reports on his or her experience over a product or service in some instances influence or persuades people. People often look to each other when making purchase or other decisions in life and the herd, mentality is a powerful force across humanity. For instance, if everyone thinks that a particular product is good, then it must be good hence the principle of consensus hence it holds since the principle of consensus involves the tendency of the individual to follow the lead group or peers. B8: Select a commercial for a product or service you do not believe you would ever buy. Cigarettes The advertisement on the cigarettes are intended to persuade people to take cigarettes while at the same time, there is a warning message that it is harmful for my health. Therefore, it is important to take precaution on the health issues. Therefore, I shall never buy cigarettes. If I would change this, I would concentrate on the benefits of cigarettes like energy, heat and the rest. Therefore, I would concentrate on benefits as the persuasive of the message and omit or place it such that one should not take much of it. B9: Which do you think is a more difficult challenge, discontinuance or deterrence? Why? Give some examples. Discontinuance Persuading the audience to stop doing something that they have been doing Deterrence Persuading audience not to start something if they haven’t already started Therefore, deterrence is better than discontinuation since people are not ready for change in most cases. B10: Consider your life in relation to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. To what degree do you feel you have attained the different levels in the hierarchy? Two or three years ago, were you at the same level where you currently are, or has your position in the hierarchy changed? In what ways do you expect it to change in the future? From early age I was strugling with phyiological and safety, after college I was looking for love and belonging and this was achieved after my marriage. Self esteem was achieved with stable source of income and I hope in near future like 5 years, I will be looking for self actualization and this can be achieved when I get political leadership which can help me gain power. B 11: Can persuasion be ethical? Why or why not? Persuasion can turn to be unethical if it is for personal gain and at the expense of others and this can happen if the audience is ignorant of lack knowledge of the issue being discussed. While it is not ethical if it does have the following components Exploration of the other person viewpoint The explanation of your view point The creation of resolution Therefore, it has two sides which can be argued out. B 12: TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO 2016/5 TX 7 SEATS For family car, Toyota land Cruiser Prado new model is the best. The year of manufacture is 2016 meaning it is brand new. The transmission is AT while it is a 4WD Drive indicating that it is suitable for all terrain. The engine type 2TR indicating that is a heavy duty with CC of 2700 and fuel type is petrol. It is a luxuries car suitable for all occasion and every family and business man should buy. B 13:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDpe9StfGTA) The speech is about self-introduction to potential employer who would wish to know you better. The speech is long and lack the target objectives hence it is not clear on the main thing he wanted to pass. The speech is very elaborative and quite exhaustive hence good. B 14: Yes, the distinction between verbal and nonverbal communication is very important in our understanding of the meaning of communication. It further helps us to understand how different methods can be used at different places and to different audience B15: What kind of value do you have for time, and what is truly important to you? My work (teaching) Reading Watching news Hobby Reading word of God The timing of these activities is very important since mixing time or extending time for one implies that one activity will not be accomplished. For personal development and success, timing is very important. B16: Time is money as many says. Speed is very important and it is passed is very important. For instance, if you want to buy stock before market closes, changes in price, if you have to buy or advise an investor, it is important to communicate that information as fast as possible. If you want to watch Euro games live, traveling by road from USA will take several months but by air, it will be immediate, hence timing and choice of means is very important. B17:  Assumptions include: Watching the reaction from respondent Use the observation to judge the respondent One is able to focus on a specific type of observation B18:  Agenda for the meeting:- Review of company sales Setting up new targets Some of the important information required is the previous minutes concerning the sales target The current sales position The deviation on the target Whether we have reached target or not What are the ways to improve the targeted sales B19: Consider the following scenario Incorporating corporate social responsibility is a very important factor in winning the hearts of the local. The company should start by employing local people and the local people will feel part and parcel of the foreign company. It is important also to offer promotions by free gift for whoever purchased items in the area. This will be very important strategy in winning the heart of the people. Persuasive advertisement will be also important. B20:  It is important to acknowledge the challenge then create information awareness is very important in such circumstances and this will help to understand the challenge. In addressing the challenge, it is very important to understand the problem and the cause of the problem since addressing the cause will help in in resolving the problem. B21: Disclosing in business is very important like in accounting, companies directors are required to give full disclosure of the financial issues and accounting information concerning the business activities. This is important as it helps outside investors in making decision concerning investment. It helps in developing trust in business and this trust is very important (Neves, Pedro & Robert p 548) B 22: Interviewee are given chance to express their knowledge on a particular issue or opportunity which is available. The interviewer are also having a chance to listen and select best candidate who has demonstrated a wider knowledge of area of concern. B23: Better group cohesion through communication- this is very important since when there is better cohesion among group members, conflict will be minimal and when members communicate freely, it helps to resolve conflict since they can freely discuss the problem which affect them within themselves. B 24: Theory of leadership I will use theory Z. Naturally, human beings are social being and are always willing to work. Each and every person is creative in his or her own way. Therefore, theory Z argues that human beings are creative and are able to be creative in their own way. Theory X believes in cohesiveness which in most cases is not the best way of handling people. For proper management, there should be good relationship between top management and the subject and this can be more effective if theory Z is put into practice. B 25: The hardest part is language barrier which can proof challenging and culture barrier. The easiest part is getting to know and learn different cultures Work cited Neves, Pedro, and Robert Eisenberger.
